Artisan and director Kevin Connor team up to bring you "The Apocalypse Watch".

Let me start by saying that this was a 1997 TV movie re-released for VHS and DVD. And that probably explains most of my complaints with this video. It involves a terrorist organization called the Fourth Reich, plot to take over the world by poisioning the world's water supply. A group of government agents seek to stop them at any costs necessary. The movie is based on the novel of the same name written by Robert Ludlum. I haven't read the book, but I bet as is most always the case; the book is probably better than the movie. It just seems that a sense of freedom and imagination that was meant for reading is lost when transferring it to the film.

Movie: B-

Not to say the movie is bad by any means. The only problems I had with it was that the pace of the movie seemed to crawl very slowly. That, and some of the acting can be quite dry . The actors sometimes seem like they have no emotions and it shows quite a bit. Other than that, the movie was quite entertaining, with quite a few twists and turns to keep my attention and some good action at times as well. I like a movie that makes you have to think at times and it seems the Apocalypse Watch did that for me.

Sound: B

I liked the soundtrack to this movie quite a lot. It was fast-paced, and kept you attached to the action. The only reason it's getting a lower score is due to the dialogue sounding really flat and not as full as it really should be. Like I said, this is probably due to being made for television; and isn't really Artisan's fault. Other than that everything sounds nice and clear, and I really did like the soundtrack and the sound effects.

Picture: B-

The picture in this movie could use some help as well. The are a lot of scratches and grain, and it's not as crisp as some of the ither Artisan releases I've seen. Maybe the TV movie production had something do do with this also, but I'm not exactly an expert on television production techniques. The colors seem a little bright as well, but other than that the picture is ok. The colors don't bleed and it doesn't get dark anywhere. I'm sorry I can be picky sometimes, but when I know they can do better than this and decide not to; I need to point it out.

If you like action movies that require you to think, and don't require them to slather the action on is tons; I'd definately tell you to give this movie a try. The problems I had with it probably won't detract from enjoying it; as the problems still allowed me to get a satisfactory experience watching it. It's quite suspenseful and has some surprises that will probably keep you interested in it throughout. As long as you're not expecting a Die Hard or Lethal Weapon type movie you probably won't regret renting or buying this video. And if you get the chance, pick up the book as well. I know I'll give it a once-over after seeing "The Apocalypse Watch".
