Disney and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale team up to
bring you "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
I
think everyone, except those in foreign countries with no link to the
outside world (and of course you do not fall into that group if you
are
reading this ;o), knows the storyline of the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Deformed bell ringer Quasimodo (voice of Tom Hulce) is taken in and
repeatedly verbally abused (if it's possible to have verbal abuse in
a
Disney movie...) by guardian Judge Claude Frollo (voice of Tony Jay).
Basically, good ol' Frollo only keep Quasi around to keep him lock in
a
belltower in Notre Dame, doesn't make much sense to me but hey, whatever
floats your boat. Anyways, poor Quasimodo lives a solitary life with
only his friends the gargoyles (Victor, Hugo, & Laverne: voiced
by
Charles Kimbrough, Jason Alexander, & Mary Wickes) and the carvings
he makes to keep him company.
Until
one day when he ventures into the outside world during the
festival of fools, where he is crowned the King of the fools....that
is
until it is discovered that his 'mask' is not a mask at all. Enter
exotically beautiful gypsy Esmeralda (voiced by Demi Moore) who feels
sorry for Quasi and helps him escape from the crazed townspeople. As
the movie goes on Quasi develops a bit of a crush on Esmeralda, who
in
turn likes him only as a friend and loves Frollo's captian of the guards
Phoebus (voice of Kevin Kline) who is madly in love with her. Do I
sense a bit of a love triangle happening here? I won't say anything
more about the movie because it'll probably give away the ending, but
I'll admit that the ending left me feeling a bit put out to say the
least.
Overall
the movie is...well...lame. It might keep the younger ones
entertained, (although very young children may be frightened by certain
scenes) but most kids will find the story over their head. And, unlike
most Disney films, there is nothing left over for the adult to enjoy.
If you want a good Disney movie that will entertain you as well as the
kids, try The Lion King 1 & 2, The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis:
The Lost Empire, and Toy Story 1 & 2 as well as the much loved classics
Robin Hood, 101 Dalmatians, and The Great Mouse Detective, among others.
