Home Video and director Woo-ping Yuen team up to bring you "Iron
Monkey".
The
"Iron Monkey" is an awesome martial arts film; choreographed
by Woo-ping Yuen, and it never fails to deliver the goods. It involves
a Robin Hood type hero, who goes by the name of Iron Monkey. He steals
gold from the high officials, and then gives it to those it need. The
governor soon arrests anybody they expect of being the "Iron
Monkey". A doctor by day, and a hero by night he tries his
hardest to hide his identity from everybody else; or face the dire consequences
for being the dreaded "Iron Monkey".
This causes choas to ensue all over the land as everybody is trying
to
discover the identity of the Iron Monkey; and leads to finger pointing
and speculation by the entire government. This doesn't sit well with
our hero, and he decides to take the law into his own hands to put an
end to the Governor's corruption of the people.
Movie: A
I thuroughly enjoyed watching this movie. The action sequences are
top-notch and at the level of artistry that is hard to match. Even
though the story is kinda old and predictable, I don't believe anybody
will care too much; they'll be too busy picking their jaws off the
floor after seeing some of the fights. The movie involves the "Iron
Monkey"; your normal doctor by day, and vigilante for the poor
at night. Him and his partner do everything possible to give the governor
a hard time, and end up getting themselves into some pretty hairy situations.
The movie also provides a good amount of comic relief throughout, so
it doesn't get too boring or slow. My only gripe with the film is that
the action isn't in enough of the film. I wish they had more fight scenes,
because the ones in the film are awesome to say the least. Other than
that, this is an excellent movie if you like martial arts
films or just action films. It has a few extras, like interviews with
Quentin Tarantino and Donnie Yen.

If there was one thing I would have to say about the sound, it is this.
The dialogue doesn't cut through very well; but it really doesn't
matter due to it being subtitled and not dubbed (an excellent choice,
I
hate dubbed movies). Although is does offer an English language track;
I'd recommend watching it with the subtitles on, as I believe dubbing
removes some of the film's imapct. Other than that the sound is
pristine and quality is high. Like most DVD's the soundtrack is done
in Dolby 5.1 surround and is very well done. The highs and lows come
in nice and clear and the music was enjoyable as well. They also were
nice enough to include a medley of the film's original musical score.
I wish more DVD's did this as I sometimes just like to listen to the
music that drives the movies.

The picture quality could've just been a little bit better. There is
an occasional bit of grain or scratches, but for the most part is an
excellent transfer to DVD. The action sequences look very nice and
it's a spectacle to witness some of the fights scenes as they are
extremely well-filmed and choreographed. The picture is bright when
it
needs to be but not too washed out. The darks are also excellent, with
just a couple of scenes being a little too dark. The colors are
vibrant and defined, resulting in a gorgeous transfer. If all martial
arts films looked this good on DVD, it would be truly awesome...as most
aren't even near this qulaity when it comes to the picture. It really
makes the bright points. the action scenes, in the movie shine like
they should.
If you're in the mood for some truly spectacular action, or liked
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon I'd definately implore you to pick up
this DVD. It has solid action scenes, an okay plot and some funny
moments sprinkled in for fun. I'd buy it just for the fact that it's
endorsed by Tarantino...who obviously knows a good film when he sees
it. I'd just watch the film with the original Chinese dialogue track
as I said before, dubbing seems to take something away from watching
a good movie and is a bad practice in the movie industry. Other than
that, two huge thumbs up from me for the "Iron Monkey".
