20th Century Fox and Director Baz Luhrmann team up to bring you "Moulin Rouge".

"You've Never Seen Anything Like It!" -Time Magazine

Venture behind the red velvet curtain and witness a spectacle beyond the imagination. Enter a fantastic world where nothing is forbidden and everything is possible - The world of "Moulin Rouge"!

Like the famous nightclub it was named after the "Moulin Rouge" teases with an invite to tax free hedonism, the luxury to indulge every whim and fantasy without remorse or discourse. But as a film "Moulin Rouge" fails to deliver on the promise that nothing matters but love. Christian (Ewan McGregor) has come to Paris to write about truth, beauty, freedom, and above all things love. Of course he has never been in love and has little experience in the bohemian lifestyle but, he plans to make up for lost time. His father warned him not to venture to Paris, but he followed his spirit and has now arrived. After someone fell through his ceiling Christian met up with a team of bohemian actors, who want to showcase the first bohemian stage show ever at the infamous "Moulin Rouge". They soon discover his skills as a poet and have him to pen their play but he will need permission from the "Moulin Rouge's" highest paid performer, Satine (Nicole Kidman). His new friends ensure he will have a private meeting with the courtesan thanks to some underhanded tactics though she assumes he is a duke and not a simple writer. The two hit it off and even after she learns the truth she realizes his skills and despite the real duke's presence they have a whirlwind romance. But when the smoke clears will Christian have his true love or will he learn that love is not able to conquer all? Well, you will just have to watch the rest of the movie to find out because I don't want to spoil it for you. :)

The mix of new and old music is a little hard to adjust to at first but it fits in with the material to a perfect match and it doesn't remain an issue past the first time it is used. This DVD has some great elaborate dance numbers which feature complex steps, intense visuals, and some good camera work. This release supports sound 5.1 options in both Dolby Digital and DTS that way you know that the musical numbers sound great. I was a little surprised by how little the surrounds are used but, it never dampers the material in the least and it is most definitely the opposite effect.

After working to create one of the most massive special editions of the year with their "Planet of the Apes" in which was released last month, they have created a similarly packed double disc edition for "Moulin Rouge" with all the extras on this DVD.

Just a few of my favorite extras are:

The Making Of "Moulin Rouge" A nicely produced fairly detailed and enjoyable 26 minute documentary this is a mixture of the history of the "Moulin Rouge" and the production of the film itself. Interviews with director Luhrmann, Kidman, McGregor and others are offered while there are also some very enjoyable behind the scenes clips and featured sections on costume design and other elements. A bit of "this is the story" promotion is included here and there but, more often fans of the film should find some interesting details about how the picture was made.

The Dance, Certainly the most interactive of all the special features, this interesting section offers extended versions of some of the dance routines that had to be reduced for running time and to focus more on the story. Complete with an intro by the director we get to see the full versions of "Tango", "Hindi", "Can Can" and "Coup De Etat". The only one that doesn't have additional multi angle capability is "Hindi". There are four different "angles" for the "multi angle" sequences and the viewer presses the number on the remote (1, 2 , 3 , 4) for the particular angle they want to view while the other 3 play in boxes below.

My final thoughts with "Moulin Rouge" are, director Luhrmann confidently succeeds in bringing a wonderfully surreal musical to the screen boasting good performances, incredible costumes and magnificent production designs. It is not without some flaws though, but, I found myself liking it somewhat better when I watched it the second time around. Fox's DVD edition is remarkable, with terrific audio and video quality and a massive amount of supplements.

Enjoy "Moulin Rouge"!
