On The Line Movie: A Sound: A+ Picture: A+ Reviewed By: Kristin Miramax and director Eric Bross bring you "On The Line". When I was told to review this movie, looked at the cover and who was starring in it I was sure I'd be in for an extremely lame movie with painfully bad acting, too much music and a sappy ending. Well, I was somewhat right yet somewhat wrong. The movie did have some parts where the acting leans toward being pretty bad, and there was quite a bit of music (it was a rare moment when all you hear are the actors, but I'll admit the 'Hey Baby' song was extremely catchy), but overall, I actually enjoyed it. The one thing I really liked it that they developed the characters, that's the one thing that annoys me to death (you know this if you've read my other reviews), when the characters are underdeveloped and thus the viewer feels no real emotion towards them. In this film, Kevin (NSYNC's Lance Bass) kind of grows on you, you really don't want to like him because he's kind of irritating and his hair and face all go in the same direction, (he really should have it sticking up and slanted the other way, he'd look more balanced) but you cringe when he's completely embarrassed, feel a twinge of indignation towards Jackie (at the same time wanting to slap Kevin for not saying something), and you end up hoping that he'll find Abbey (Emmanuelle Chriqui). But I'm getting ahead of myself... The movie is based on Kevin, a shy 24-year-old guy that just can't step out of his comfort zone, especially after an incident in high school. He runs into a girl (Abbey) on the L train while commuting and they instantly click. Being the way he is, Kevin lets Abbey slip away without getting her name and number. So, after thinking about it, he regrets his actions and launches an all-out campaign to find her. Unfortunately for him, his plan backfires and instead of finding Abbey, hundreds of single women find him, Mr. Sensitive Risk-Taker. In addition to that, he's signed to the prestigious Reebok account at the advertising company he works with and every idea he comes up with (which turn out to be big hits with Reebok) is stolen by his ruthless co-worker Jackie (Tamala Jones) and presented as her own ideas. To make matters worse, his three friends, and roomates, Rod (NSYNC's Joey Fantone, whom I found pretty obnoxious but worked perfectly for the part), Eric (Gregory Qaiyum) and Randy (James Bulliard) talk him into letting them "screen" his many prospects. Of course, Abbey ends up meeting one of them for dinner and is convinced that Kevin's behind a giant scam, a newspaper article then confirms her feelings. Basically the entire world then turns on Kevin and it's up to him to make things right. And, of course, he does, and everyone has a happy ending. The one thing that surprised me about this film is that this is not a chick flick. In fact, you very rarely get Abbey's point-of-view, the majority of this movie is about guys, their dates, their music, their flatulence (another point in it's favor, I like a good flatulence joke as much as the next girl) and the way that they think. I was happy to see that for once, the movie didn't make men look like stupid, mindless idiots that are always falling all over themselves (although there was some of that), and neither did it make them out to be superheros that have the answer to everything. The extras are plentiful on this DVD with deleted and alternate scenes, outtakes, commentary, behind-the-scenes featurette, 'On the Line' music video, making the music video, director's home video, star bios, cast interviews, and theatrical trailer. With a half-way decent, although not the greatest actor, leading man, a good supporting cast, this movie pulls off a nice comedy that the entire family can enjoy. By the way, stick around for the credits, in them is my favorite part of the entire movie, it's a scene with the other NSYNC guys playing a hairdresser and make-up artist, and it is truly hilarious.
