Planet Of The Apes

20th Century Fox and Director Tim Burton team up to bring you "Planet Of The Apes ".

Get ready for "a wild ride" (The Washington Post)

In the year 2029, an American astronaut (Mark Wahlberg) crash lands on a strange planet where talking apes rule over the human race. Now he must evade the advancing gorilla army to reach a sacred temple that may hold the shocking secrets of mankind's past and the last hope for its salvation.

The story isn't the same as the 1968 original. Director Tim Burton calls this a reimagining of the same story. This time our hero is played by Mark Wahlberg and as in the original film he finds himself crash landed on a planet where apes are the superior primates not humans. Some of the differences are that Mark comes alone instead of with a crew and this time the native humans can talk. And the plot of the movie involving the interaction between the apes and their new visiting human is just totally different from the original.

Mark Wahlberg gets the credit as the star, but the real stars here are the wonderful creations of Rick Baker. For the people who do not know, Rick is the best makeup man in Hollywood (in my opinion). Every character you've seen in the last 20 or so years where the makeup is just jaw dropping from The Klump family in Nutty Professor to the Grinch to the werewolves in Wolf and An American Werewolf in London to Bigfoot in Harry and the Henderson are all the work of Baker. He has done apes before including Gorillas in the Mist among others. But, I honestly believe Planet of the Apes is his best work to date.

The apes are simply incredible. They look great and are believable even in all the closeups in which were done. Unlike the original their movements and mannerisms are also much more ape like. The actors actually had to attend an ape school to learn how to walk like the animals.

Planet of the Apes is a remake of what was the first in a five-movie series, and true to form this one concludes with a serial like unresolved ending that promises more sequels yet to come.

Stay Tuned!
