"Shrek" is simply a breath of fresh air for many. An almost perfect family blockbuster that is funny from start to finish with the right mixture of juvenile and more adult humour. Although in many ways it pokes fun at the traditional Disney fare, "Shrek" is actually a success because it manages to perfectly capture the essence of the Toy Story films, It is a traditional fairytale with a cynical modern twist.

When Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) a man not blessed in the height department decides to rid his kingdom of fairytale creatures they all end up in the swamp inhabited by "Shrek" (Michael Myers) an ogre who likes nothing better than some peace and quiet. Not amused at the invasion of his land, "Shrek" seeks out Farquaad in order to regain his peacefulness. Farquaad makes Shrek a deal; rescue the beautiful and fiery Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from a dragon protected castle, so that she can be Farquaad's wife, and "Shrek" can have the swamp to himself once again. Obviously "Shrek" accepts the deal and is joined on his journey by the fast-talking Donkey (Eddie Murphy).

What's great about "Shrek" is that it's a smart, full of wonderful animation and will make you laugh uncontrollably. If the film isn't pulling from its bag of tricks and gags its clever dialogue will make you giggle. Eddie Murphy's sarcastic talking mule is a definite scene-stealer and Murphy hasn't been this funny since he lent his voice to the Disney film Mulan. Forget the Professor and the Doctor, this is the Eddie we know and love.

I also enjoyed John Lithgow's over acting within the voice of the midget lord. John Lithgow's display of dialogue makes you feel sorry for this lord and also hate him at the same time.

Cameron Diaz's princess could have been any actress because her voice really did not flesh out the princess any more or any less. In my opnion she was sort of just there.

Mike Myers as the film's lead character "Shrek" sounds the exact same way he did in "So I Married an Axe Murderer". The character was originally designed for the late Chris Farley which I think he sure could have brought more sarcasm and over-acting to "Shrek" giving him a very unique personality. I feel that Myers was pretty good but he could have been a lot more interesting.

"Shrek's" presence at the competition takes on a WWF tone. Knights are tossed, slammed, and beaten with chairs."Shrek", the victor, wins the right to rescue the Princess. "Shrek" and his trusty wisecracking buddy, Donkey, set out on their quest. What ensues is some very hilarious, smart and witty dialogue featuring purloined lines and scenes from other movies.

Most notable among the many bonus features is a ReVoice DVD-ROM feature. DreamWorks describes it as "a never-before-used" DVD-ROM technology that lets the viewer become the actor. The program enables viewers to select from 12 of the film's most popular scenes and record the lines of the characters. It then links up their voice with the character's mouth. The viewer can also view the scene and see how their performance as the voice of "Shrek", Donkey, Fiona or Farquaad plays!" This is a very cool feature that Dreamworks added to this DVD.
