Universal
Studios and
director Steve Boyum team up to bring you "Slap Shot 2".
Get
set for more hard-charging action and laughs than you can shake a stick
at - in the uproarious, star-powered sequel to "Slap Shot",
the original classic hailed as "one of the top ten sports movies
ever!" (Sports Illustrated, ESPN.com, The Sporting News)
The
Hansons rock, and I'm not talking about the horrible pop trio of the
same name. The Hansons I'm talking about are 3 no-bull, hardcore, hockey
lovers; they live the sport. If you've seen the original "Slap
Shot", you'll know exactly what I mean.
Taking place, oh I'd say about 25 years later; "Slap Shot"
was due for a sequel much sooner than this. But I think the sacrifice
of waiting is worth it; especially to fans of the original. Stephen
Baldwin stars as Sean Linden, a coach of the one-time champions the
Chiefs. Well, as you can probably figure; they suck now. Put that together
with their team getting sold to a millionaire (Played by Gary Busey)
to be used in a new bogus hockey league and a new coach. A woman (Played
by Jessica Steen).
There are a few bonus features worth mentioning here also. A 30 min.
Making-Of Featurette, which shows the techniques that were used to get
the shots on the ice, the actors training, etc. It offers quite a deal
of depth into the movie for only being a half-hour long. There is also
an brief interview with the Hanson brothers. It's not much, but what
is there is quite funny.

I really wanted to like this movie more, but when it comes down to it;
it's basically the same old formula as most sports movies. Take a bunch
of losers, then make them winners. "Slap Shot 2" takes
the same approach but with a slightly different angle to it. It adds
a few nice twists and turns that kept me surprised (although the ending
really didn't surprise me too much). As it is though, it is thuroughly
enjoyable as long as you're not trying to take yourself or the movie
too seriously; and if you enjoy seeing comedic violence (Although real
violence is not funny). Baldwin and Busey do very commendable jobs,
with Busey being very convincing in his role as the Chief's new owner.
The standouts though, are the Hansons. They are hilarious throughout,
and hockey fans will love them.
Sound: A
Nothing to complain about here. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby
5.1, and is just about perfect. It is clean, and everything cuts through
as it should. The highs and lows are clean as crystal, and the feel
of hockey is captured well with the soundtrack.

There is only one real thing I need to complain about the picture quality
on "Slap Shot 2". It's too damned dark. It's not really
noticeable during bright scenes, but during dark scenes the picture
tends to get very dark but watchable. Other than that, the picture is
clear of artifacts; and not washed out at all. It's a very good and
crisp transfer, like it should be for the most part.
I'd definately tell sports and hockey fans to go out and buy this DVD.
It's a good sequel (which is a rarity) and is quite funny as just a
comedy itself. If you like violence, great hockey action, and humor
that throws a few punches; then what are you waiting for? Go buy it.
