The Terminator Special Edition Reviewed By: David Movie: A+ Sound: A+ Picture: A+ MGM presents The Terminator Special Edition! Directed and written by James Cameron. Yes, The Terminator has been released! And it was also released one other time on DVD as a movie only disc. But now MGM has gone all out for a fully loaded special edition DVD. But I have to say that this just might be the perfect DVD.
This film revolves around Sarah Connor which is Linda Hamilton in real life who is a waitress and living an ordinary life in the middle of Los Angeles California. Things will change for the worse one night when a Terminator which is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger has arrived from the future to take her out since the son she is carrying will lead the human resistance movement against the machines after a war breaks out. She is informed of her fate by another warrior sent over to save her which is Kyle Reese played by Michael Biehn. Throughout the early parts of the film both Kyle and the Terminator track Sarah and once the cyborg makes her the chase is on now. The rest of the film follows Sarah and Kyle as they run from The Terminator and try to find a way to get rid of him something that is not an easy task with the current state of weaponry.
I am also very happy to report that like Artisans decision in Terminator 2 that MGM included bonus materials on the 2 sided disc. This convenience not only saves you the trouble of fumbling around through two separate DVD's and it saves you the trouble of messing around with a double keep case also. The fun 18-minute featurette called Terminator A Retrospective consists mainly of a sit down interview with James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger from 1991. This is intercut with some separate interviews and clips from the movie. There are some amusing anecdotes and a few insights but most of the interview footage looks like it is quite old especially the clothes.
Another thrill for all the Terminator fans will be the seven deleted scenes that are with or without commentary from James Cameron. Text explanations are also provided on where they fit into the movie and why they were dropped. All the scenes are presented in a non anamorphic widescreen and of pretty decent quality and can be accessed individually or via the play all function. Though none of them is truly revelatory they all do provide a glimpse into the development and streamlining of the story structure. There are also extensive still galleries divided into five sections and they are James Cameron artwork, production photos, Stan Winston effects, Fantasy II visual effects and publicity materials as well as Cameron's original 1982 story treatment. These galleries are very extensive and included alot of great material including storyboards, conceptual art and advertising materials. These are very easy to navigate around I felt like. And to finish all these great goodies there is a great set of three theatrical trailers in which two are from the domestic and one from the foreign release and two television spots from 1984. The condition of the footage makes you truly appreciate that was put into the current remaster of this movie. There is also an 8-page collectible booklet with some production notes that MGM has included.
The
first Terminator was shot back in 1984 and while stereo and even
surround sound were in use at that time director James Cameron chose to
release it with a simple mono soundtrack. Thankfully MGM have done the
business with this release and sourced a brand new never before heard
5.1 Dolby Digital remix based on the original sound elements from the
film. This is very cool! Without any doubt in my mind that this DVD would be the ultimate Terminator reference DVD for your collection! I would absolutely recommend this movie to anyone especially those interested in the very first Terminator movie. This new Terminator movie released by MGM will make you throw away any other Terminator movie that you have. Click here to purchase this movie.
